Stoke Central Conservative PPC Norsheen Bhatti and the local party intend to stand up for the local pub community and support The Coachmakers campaign against it's proposed closure. Recent figures show that a net 3,690 local pubs have closed under Labour. On top of Gordon Brown’s above-inflation rises in alcohol duty imposed in the Budget local pubs will face above-inflation hikes in their Rateable Values – and thus their tax bills.

Burslem's Bulls Head is - quite rightly - well known on the local pub scene. It could be said that it shares the title of the town's jewel in the ale crown with The Leopard, although it may be the case that the latter just about beats the Bull's Head - albeit by the slightest of margins.

A selection of 59 items from the Staffordshire Hoard will be displayed at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, including a delicate filigree gold horse’s head, a gold strip with a biblical inscription and a crumpled gold plaque with ornate fish and bird heads. At the same time a similar number of items will be on display at Birmingham Museum, including helmet fragments with animal decorations and warriors.

Poor Relations?

09 Mar 2010
Why do the City Council feel it is ok to be treated as poor relations? I was looking at the Staffordshire Hoard website a few days ago and one thing struck me, the size of the Stoke-on-Trent City Council logo compared to those of other councils.

Audio Interview Now Online! Council Leader Ross Irving has had a difficult time of it lately. First there was the Full Council meeting [and all the preamble] where the Annual Budget was agreed and 'that' Labour Amendment was tabled. Then there was the news that Staffordshire Police was investigating the Procurement Procedures and in particular tendering for demolition contracts.

Well done Gary Elsby, Barry Stockley and Mick Williams for finally taking a stand in that they are taking legal action against their treatment by the local Labour Party. I only wish I had done so when I could, and should have done. Needless to say, any assistance I can give, I will gladly do so. I know with the meetings I went to that there was no way Gary Elsby was going to be Labour candidate.

Berryhill and Hanley East City Councillor Adrian Knapper is shocked and outraged to read within Friday nights Sentinel that the Conservative/Independent Liberal Democrat Alliance that now runs Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants to expand Birches Head School by an extra 300 pupils when residents within the Bucknall area want a new School at the Mitchell site.

City Council’s Fostering Service have launched a campaign urging people in the city to “be the big difference” by supporting disabled children and their families needing a short break. Short Breaks are the support service requested by families of disabled children. They are regular opportunities for families to have a break from caring while the child enjoys spending time with a short break carer.

There was an interesting article in the Observer yesterday on the north south divide in the economy. In effect the piece by Ruth Sunderland was a damming indictment of the industrial policy of successive governments since Thatcher and the loss of jobs in the manufacturing sector.
